About the Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program welcomed its first class of six residents in 1998. Expanding upon a popular private practice, it began its mission to provide the community with an alternative for their families' healthcare. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and receives up to 500 applications each year. Of the applicants, 20 to 30 candidates are interviewed for our 6 positions each year. Ideal candidates have a primary interest in family medicine and meet the program's high academic standards.

For the first two years of the three-year program, much of the training is hospital based. First year residents rotate through surgery, obstetrics, adult medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry and the Emergency Department. Second-year training includes adult medicine, cardiology, gynecology, orthopedics, outpatient pediatrics, newborn nursery, neonatal intensive care unit and electives. The third year includes electives, adult medicine, internal medicine subspecialties and sports medicine.

The program proudly affiliates with Children's Hospital and Tulane University Hospital for more comprehensive inpatient pediatrics training than another "unopposed" program might offer alone. Other rotations, such as Surgery, OB, and subspecialties are done with physicians in private practice at or affiliated with EJGH. This allows our residents to fulfill their educational goals as they see fit, without complications from competing with residents and program hierarchies in other fields. At EJGH residents are students, but also physicians who park in the same lot, relax in the same lounge, and wear the same coat as any other here.

The most important and unique aspect of our training is the time residents spend in the Family Medicine Clinic. Each resident follows his or her own panel of patients under the direction of the program faculty, several of whom have continuity with patients that predates our program. The number of patients depends on the residents’ experience. They begin with a small group of patients in their first year and gradually increase caseloads until they are seeing as many patients here as they will see in private practice. The program also incorporates the managerial issues residents will face in their practices, including billing, coding and staffing.
